Patients
Four major components are utilized by the physician to define the diagnosis of the patient: specific measurements of lung function, a detailed patient history, a physical examination, and allergy testing.
Spirometry and a peak flow meter are two devices to measure lung function. A spirometry is a computerized measurement of lung function performed in the office. Spirometry is often measured before and after receiving medication. The percentage of change in lung function is a factor in making the diagnosis of asthma. Peak flows are measured both in the office and in the home setting by the patient.
A detailed patient history is reviewed by the physician and an examination performed. Appropriate testing will be ordered and results reviewed with the patient and family. Nursing staff will review a detailed written treatment plan that outlines proper use of medication and devices, avoidance techniques, and follow-up care. The treatment plan will also be forwarded to your primary care doctor.
Asthma education classes for our patients and their families are available at various times throughout the year. Call our office for class times.

An FDA Safety Advisory Board concluded that the risks of treating asthma with Serevent or Foradil outweigh the benefits. In addition, they concluded that adult patients can continue to take Advair (Flovent + Serevent) and Symbicort (Pulmicort + Foradil) for the treatment of asthma. The FDA has recommended that both Advair and Symbicort be used with caution in the pediatric population.
The Arizona Asthma and Allergy Institute agrees with the recommendations of the FDA. Physicians at the institute have consistently advocated that Serevent, Foradil and other similar medications only be used in combination with inhaled corticosteroids, when absolutely necessary, and in accordance with national guidelines.
We Recommend the Following:
- Continue Current Medications: Asthma patients should continue their current medications.
- Make an Appointment: Asthma patients should make an appointment at their earliest convenience to discuss the best treatment options for their asthma.
- Contact Insurance: Asthma patients should contact their insurance prior to their appointment to determine:
- Which asthma medications are currently covered by their insurance.
- What is the insurance coverage for Allergy Immunotherapy.
The Arizona Asthma & Allergy Institute is committed to providing safe and effective asthma care. We look forward to our continued participation in your health care.
